What is it, how does it work inside our Air Purifier
Air purifiers work by drawing in the air and passing the air through a single or series of filters to capture contaminants. Some of the best and most efficient air purifiers use a combination of ion technology, UV light, titanium dioxide (Ti02) in addition to filters. Our air purification 2′ x 2′ upper ceiling troffer uses both UV-C (germicidal range) and titanium dioxide to generate the powerful reaction called “photocatalysis” to purify the air.
First, what is photocatalytic oxidation. The photocatalytic oxidation (PCO) process combines UV irradiation in the germicidal (C) range with a substance (catalyst) titanium dioxide which results in a reaction that changes malignant contaminants into water, carbon dioxide. The reaction is based on the creation of ‘hydroxyl radicals’. These are a neutral from of hydroxide ions which are extremely potent and reactive and what makes the PCO process so effective with both organic and inorganic molecules, including DNA, lipids and proteins.
In our air purifier the process is similar to every type of purifier which uses PCO technology. As harmful contaminants in the air circulates in a room or area where our UVGI has been installed, air drawn into the intake louvers. From there air is filtered by a filter to capture larger particulates then a second filter which is designed to screen out smaller particles. This is the first stage which once filtered the air moves into the irradiation chamber. Inside the chamber we a highly reflective mirror-type of material to increase the reflectance of the UV light. As the air is pushed into this chamber it is exposed to a perforated piece of metal which has been coated in a special Tio2 substance. There are various suppliers and manufactures for Tio2 but we have sourced what we believe is the best in the world to use for our air purifier to ensure efficient results.

Inside the irradiation chamber (as shown in the diagram) microbes then get through the filters are then “attacked” by the free hydroxy radicals and super-oxide ions which break down their cellular structure and destroying intracellular mass and DNA. In short, this kills the pathogens from replicating and neutralizing them.
Since pathogens are neutralized based on the time and intensity of exposure to UV-C radiation the air flow through the chamber is designed for maximum exposure to UV light and the Tio2 catalyst. Our chamber design is the ideal method to destroy harmful pathogens. Unlike larger HVAC systems which have air flowing through a central air duct system, the air flow is too massive and streaming in at such a rate it would not be feasible to build an adequate chamber using PCO.
